Khuli Chana Gets International Recognition for Celebrating Africa
It was a big week for African musicians at international award shows. Wizkid took home the Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards which were held in Los Angeles. Across the pond in Cannes, Khuli Chana was also collecting an accolade of his own. His video for One Source received two silvers and one gold award in the entertainment categories at the 2017 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
One Source is taken from the “Motswak-Originator’s” most recent EP of the same title which was released last year. The video was shot in Accra and produced by Egg Films with Native VML and directed by Sunu. When the video first came out his intention was to reinvent himself, he was traveling the continent and trying to find something new and meaningful.
About this effort Khuli said, “We’re doing what we should have done a long time ago, owning who we are as Africans and coming together and breaking these boundaries for good, for the better”. And the director, Sunu, concurred: “Everyone obviously thinks Africa is the heart of darkness but I think it’s a heart of lightness. I wanted this music video to be a celebration of our African-ness to show the creative flame burning across the continent.”
The video is haunting and is as vibrant as the song itself; it's clear that Khuli and Sunu left everything on the record. The pursuit was noble and both artists have been rewarded handsomely for daring to do it. Well done! #Kwesefied
