Artist Abused by Airbnb Host-Airbnb CEO Responds
South African visual artist Sibahle Steve Nkumbi was thrown down a staircase by a 47-year-old white male while leaving an Airbnb address she was staying at in Amsterdam, . Nkumbi came to Amsterdam to work an exhibit at the Amsterdam Stedelijk alongside award winning photographer Zanele Muholi. The man has since been arrested and charged with Attempted Manslaughter. According to the rules of Airbnb if a guest has violated their agreement by not checking out on time, the host may contact Airbnb and the guest can be liable for a fine or charged an extra day. Any disagreements between the host and guest should be resolved amicably and should not result in any violence ( physical, verbal or otherwise) We managed to get a statement from AirBnB CEO Brian Chesky: Attributable to David King, Airbnb's Director of Diversity & Belonging: "Appalling and unconscionable behavior against members of our community runs counter to everything Airbnb stands for. Our CEO Brian Chesky and I are reaching out to the affected guests. We will take the strongest actions we can against such abhorrent conduct, including banning people for life from our platform and assisting law enforcement with their investigation and potential prosecution. Nobody should ever be treated like this and it will not be tolerated." * Watch the video below for footage of the incident and an interview with Sibahle Nkumbi.
